What Would They Do?

Wednesday, I came home after a fun, but tiring day with my grandson. I wanted to grab something to eat and watch some TV. I tried to get the Detroit Tigers game. For some reason the station wasn't coming in. Well it was a gloomy day. Maybe that was it. So I put on a DVD, Howard Keel telling all about the making of the movie "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers." I was near the end when my husband called and asked if I was watching the game. I said I tried, etc, etc. He said one of our pitchers, Armando Galarraga was in the 8th inning and had a no-hitter going. I said O.K., I'd try again. So, I tried both T.V.s and couldn't get the game on either station. My movie was shot. So I did dishes and light work until my husband came home. His first words were, "he was robbed." Then I learned the story. Not only did Armando have a no-hitter going, but it was a perfect game (no walks. I just learned that.) The umpire called the very last person safe at home, ending the whole thing. Then, the pitcher got one more perfect out and we won, 3-0. The replay showed that the person at first was clearly out.

I don't know how much attention this story is getting outside of Detroit. We here, were all talking about it yesterday. Some were angry. Many were just glad that the "robbed" pitcher and the manager acted like such gentlemen. I am happy about that. Everyone is sad. Even the Cleveland Indians, the opponents, seemed sad. And now it is decided that there will be no reversal of the call.

There was a time when Roger Maris' home run record had an asterisk on it because the season then was longer that the one where the first record stood. The asterisk has since been removed, but not in Roger's lifetime. I hope that if they ever do give Armando the game, he will live to see it.

Now I have a question for all of my friends who write romances. Certainly some of your characters are sports fans. No? Are you sure? If this scenario happened to their beloved team, what would they do? Would they write a letter to the editor? Would they be happy for the great game and forget it, or somewhere in between? I don't want to know what you think about this situation this time. What would your characters think? Have fun with this.

  1. Hi Nancy -

Although I liked baseball as a young adult, I'm not much of a sports buff. I'd have to do some heavy duty research to make it believable.

Everyone thinks life should be fair. Unfortunately, many times that isn't the case. Having a character face such a situation might not be what we want, but would come across as realistic.

    Blessings,
    Susan :)

  2. Thanks for your comments, Susan. That's what I'm getting out of this. Games may be perfect but life certainly is not. Blessigs.

  3. I wondered what was up with that as I saw a small piece on it. I would hope my character would take it in stride but I don't think so:)

  4. I think my character would get very upset. She wants to heal the world and so she would feel it was her duty to help right the wrong:)

  5. Terri - It's fun to wonder about though, don't you think?

  6. Kara - I like your character. I'll bet she gets in trouble at times. Would love to hear more.

  7. I never watch or have anything to do with sports but I actually heard about this on the radio this morning! And I'm in Florida.
    I don't know what I'd do...

  8. Jessica - Not like sports? Ha ha. I'm right there with you. Most sports I dislike heavily. I always liked my kids sports - at least most of them. And for some reason, I love the Detroit Tigers. Go figure.

  9. I don't care about sports and I don't write romance, but it's too bad when injustice seems to prevail. The truth always wins in the end.
