My New Bible Reading Plan

I wanted to try something new this year with reading my Bible.  I love all of the epistles so I wanted to make sure I included those.  It's been too long since I've gone all the way through the Old Testament.  So I thought it would be fun to read in several different places.

I am ashamed to say that I had a tendency to skip First and Second Chronicles.  Mainly this is because the stories of the kings are also in First and Second Samuel and First and Second Kings.  And the Chronicles start out with genealogies.  Yes they can be dry, but they also set up the patriarchs and Moses and his family and other important people like David.  So, because there are some little gems along the way, it is enjoyable.  And you don't have to pronounce each name to yourself.  You can scan to see if you can learn something new.

I am also doing Proverbs in the Old Testament.  This book has many helpful sayings and much wisdom.  In the Old Testament, if I have time to read a little longer at one sitting, I'm doing Genesis.

In the New Testament, I'm doing Matthew.  I have just finished The Sermon On The Mount.  I know there are great  healing stories from Jesus in this book.  (It also starts with a genealogy.)  Then I am doing Romans which is one of my favorite books.  It is all about Grace and has so much good reading to absorb.  In my extended reading in the New Testament, I'm doing Acts.

It is amazing how reading from four different places brings the New and Old testaments together in a wonderful way.  It sounds like a lot, but I am actually only reading two chapters a day.  Mon. through Thurs. I do the New Testament, Friday through Sunday, I do the Old Testament.  The other chapters, as I said are extra, just in case I want to read further.  I may not get as much done as I'd like, but it is the process which is important.  I am learning so much this way and it is very enjoyable.

Have you a favorite book of the Bible?  Why is it your favorite?

  1. I did a similar reading one year - I didn't make it up but followed SOMEone's printed plan....

I love the Psalms & Proverbs in Old Testament & Romans and James in the New....

My husband is preaching through Acts these days and in our Ladies' Bible study, we're doing the Gospel of John...

  3. I think the way you're reading through is sort of intriguing, Nancy. I'm currently on my third reading through of the entire Bible. I tend to be super methodical, so I always start with Genesis and just work my way through. But this time I'm using a commentary to read along with it, and it's amazing to me how much more I'm learning, and how much of the OT ties in with the NT in ways I never even noticed before!

I don't have one favorite book, but I love some of the stories. Certain ones really stick with me, Joseph is one of my favs! Happy reading!

  4. I'm trying something new too! I have a Bible in a Year and last year I read the whole thing. But this year, I'm just reading the Psalms and Proverbs. It will take me through each book twice in the year.
My favorite books tend to change depending on where I am spiritually. But for the last year or two, I have been LOVING Psalms and have been using some of them as my own prayers.

  5. This sounds like a good plan. I think the best plan is one that we actually stay with, you know? My favorite book is the Psalms. I find much comfort and strength there.

  6. Holly - I loved the Joseph story so much when I was a little girl that it stuck with me always. My eldest son is Joseph and second son is Benjamin.

  7. Jennifer and Karen - I love the Psalms, too. That it is the most marked up book in my Bible says a lot about its use.

  8. I'm reading through the Bible devotionally. It's the second time I've done it this way. Currently, I'm in I Corinthians. While it takes longer than reading the Bible in a year, I enjoy it more. I'm taking time to meditate on what I'm reading and journal the insights He gives me.

It's hard for me to say I have a favorite book. There are gems in each one.
